The Insider’s View – “It’s not what you do but how you do it.”
Gerard Gillespie MBA 2014, is Regional Manager for Aircraft Maintenance Services Australia (AMSA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore International Airlines Engineering. AMSA provides world class aircraft maintenance services across Australia to more than 18 international airlines on a broad range of both narrow and wide body aircraft.
When Gerard joined the company in 2015, it was underperforming. In less than 2 years, he has transformed it into a growing and profitable business.
His learning lessons: leadership in engineering – or any industry – is not about being dictatorial, rather its about getting ownership from each and every individual team member.
Gerard’s own journey has seen him make the transition from being a highly skilled and ‘logical’ aircraft engineer – in a universe of certain knowledge and confidence that you have the ‘right answer’ – to adopting a leadership mindset where confidence comes from knowing you may know nothing and may be wrong more often than you are right.
Gerard’s motto: It’s not what you need to do, but how you do it. What he learnt at Cranfield taught him about how to challenge yourself and your perspectives and how to lead and inspire those around you to get the job done well. Gerard has plenty of real life examples to illustrate his talk.
Cost: $0 if you are coming to the dinner, otherwise $30 per ticket (inclusive of canapés and glass of bubbles after the session).
Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation
Alex Chapman will present the Tenth Cranfield Australian Alumni Scholarship to the winner. The 2017 finalists, Vedran Azman, Susan Kennedy and Ganesh are the finalists for 2017. You can read about them here.
Lily Rattray (MBA 2016), Winner in 2015, is Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
As well as the formal parts of the evening, we will be entertained by the traditional annual video from the 2016 winner and finalists: Andrew Smith.
Cranfield Alumni from all schools and years, their partners, guests, supporters, sponsors and media are all welcome.
Cost: $119 for one ticket, $238 for two tickets (inclusive of canapés, dinner and drinks on arrival).
